Understanding Income & Taxes

๐Ÿ“Š Gross vs. Net Pay

Gross pay is your total earnings before any deductions. Net pay (take-home) is what you actually receive after taxes, Social Security, Medicare, and other deductions. On average, expect 25-30% to be deducted from your gross pay.

๐Ÿ’ผ Salary Conversions

To convert annual salary to hourly: divide by 2,080 (40 hours ร— 52 weeks). For example, $60,000/year รท 2,080 = $28.85/hour. Remember this is gross pay before taxes and doesn't account for PTO or holidays.

๐Ÿ“‹ Tax Withholding

Your employer withholds federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), and Medicare (1.45%) from each paycheck. The federal income tax amount depends on your income, filing status, and W-4 withholdings. Adjust your W-4 carefully to avoid owing or overpaying taxes.

๐Ÿ’ก Pre-Tax Deductions

Contributions to 401(k), health insurance, HSA, and FSA are deducted before taxes, reducing your taxable income and saving you money. A $500 monthly 401(k) contribution can save you $150+ per month in taxes (at 30% tax rate).
